Sleeklens Presets for Lightroom
I've recently been contacted by a company called Sleeklens based in Denmark, a company that provide preset workflows for Lightroom and Photoshop.
My initial thoughts were "here we go again another company trying to make a quick buck by supplying awful presets that work for them and no-one else" as i sift through the email they ask for an honest review in exchange for one of their landscape collections.
Someone asking for an honest review on photo editing presets might as well start digging their own graves, so i said "lets do it"
They sent over the "Through the Woods Workflow" for Lightroom as it's the program i use the most, if you have used presets in the past you will know that you're not going to make the perfect image from one click, we all have different editing styles, presets help us get to the finished product that little bit faster.
I have selected three of my favourite landscapes all taken in Guernsey that i think will work well with these presets.
I delve in to a sunset image i took recently and straight off with one click of the Calm sunset preset and a couple of small brush adjustments i get this.
The image is far from finished but as i mentioned earlier you're not going to get a finished product from one click, but its a bloody good start and I'm impressed.
Moving on to an image i took back in 2015 and I start to get really frustrated with some of the brushes, giving me way too much or way too little changes, the good thing about the brushes is you can make changes to the sliders and the effect is applied straight to the image.
I took a quick look at the Sleeklens website to find some tutorials on how to use the workflow to its best, it was good to see they're making adjustments to the brushes as they go and not trying to sell it as one stop brush presets.
I continued to reset the image and start again, with a bit more success.
After a couple of hours using the brushes and understanding what they were doing to the image i started to feel a bit more comfortable.
I remember editing this last image back when i took it and it was an absolute nightmare, so using the presets and brushes on it would put them to the ultimate test.
One thing Sleeklens don't mention or at least i haven't seen them mention is that the the brush presets can also be used as graduated filters and and radial filters, something i tend to use more often, from there i then use the brush within them to add or remove effect to areas in the image.
Do i see myself using these presets in the future......? Yes, or at least as part of my process, I'm not going to say they're all great because their not but depending on your style they may work for you.
As far as presets go "Through the Woods Workflow" presets for Lightroom are probably the best I've used, and if you're looking to improve your images and workflow they are going to get you off to a good start.
